ROYAL CHIEF.

REST FOR TWO MONTHS. (By “Spectator,”) In Sydney Royal Chief earned £1503 in Place money, u very good return, even though ho did not win a raco. llis trainer was disappointed with iiis early iorm on the trip, though he did well at Randwiek. lie has, however, seen his best day, his great finishing run being missing, as in several of his races he failed to carry oil up to the winning post, but as he is six years old, this is not a matter lor surprise. . lie will bo spelled for two months, after which his spring campaign will he discussed. Probably h will be done in New Zealand, though another Sydney trip may be considered next autumn, when there arc plenty of races over a distance. Ajax to Race Again. Ajax, by his wins at Randwiek, carried his stake earnings to £38,025, and ho is now sixth on the list of great winners. It was generally understood that Ajax would be sold last month and retired lo the stud, but owing to .sonic legal technicality his sale has lien postponed, and ho will ho raced again next “cason as a six-year-old, when he should add still further to his creditable total. Distress Signal’s Promise. Mr G. It. Grace’s two-year-old Distress Signal showed pace and promise at llawke’s Bay. lie received a bad passage the, first day and on the second beat all but Cherry Bay. Distress Signal is a chestnut gliding by Rocket from Pandia, by Chief ltulcr from Panpipes, by Panmuro —Pas Soul, by Soult. It is a well-known “ilighden” family. Pas Seul was half-sister to Nyland and Boanerges.

Rewards for Riding. D. Munro, who rode nine of the 26 flat raco winners at the A..J.C. autumn meeting, has rejected an attractive offer to ride in India when the next season opens. A year ago Munro refused the offer of a very large retainer, but ahe bait this year is even larger. In fact, it is , much larger than any other Australian jockey has been offered, hut Munro considers that while he is doing so well in Australia it would bo foolish to leave. In winning percentages alone, Munro receives £641 for his four days’ work at Randwiek, and, in addition, there will he some handsome gratuities, as among his wins wore the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup. Southern Jumpers. Although ho has not shown himself a real stayer, Gold Wren is a brilliant fencer who won £1360 last season. Gold Wren, if he stands up to training, should have another good winter. His record last season included six iirsts in 12 starts. Some novice jumpers are reported to have given promising displays in schooling, but until the test of racing comes Survoy, Slayer and Gold Wren must be considered the three best among South Island jumpers, llallybrit has done well since his Great Western success at Riverton, but it is not intended to race him again till the Dunedin meeting in June, while it is likely that ho will go on lo Trentham. Trisox, who pulled up badly aftor running second in Ihe Great Western, is apparently sound again. Providing he stands up to work ho will ho rtaken to Trentham in July, with a view to contesting the Wellington Steeplechase.
