ARMIES IN THE WEST.
(Received March 23, 0.25 a.m. i’ARIS, Marcli 22. The morning communique states that there was a calm nieht over the whole front.
An earlier French official evening communique from the Western Front stated: “There has been activity by reconnaissance units on the British front and also encounters between patrols which ended to the entire advantage of the Allies.” B.E.F. Headquarters report that five Germans were killed and one raptured when a British patrol defeated a German patrol m a sharp fight beyond the Alaginnt Line last night. There wore no British casualties. The action occurred shortly after a German raid on a British outpost in the same sector. A Paris message says that the French took two batches of prisoners west of the Saar. A Paris message says that the past 24 hours have been very quiet on the i Western Front apart from the sector immediately east and west of the River Saar. Here the German patrols are more active than usual. Several advanced to the French posts being exceptionally aggressive, hut the French repulsed them without much difficulty.
