COUNCIL OF WOMEN

At the monthly meeting of the Manawatu branch of the National Council. of Women those present wore Mesdames J. A. Harris (Turakina), who presided, S. Green (Keilding), W. I l '. Field, W. A. Jionilaee, Misses M. Mathcson, M. Jones, M. Grant and C. Jamieson (secretary). it was agreed to send a letter of sympathy to -Miss M. K. Simpson, of “Closeburn,” Marton, in her indisposition. The secretary reported that, as Mrs H. Paterson (president) had not been able to accept nomination as Dominion president, Mrs Harris’s name had been submitted. Mrs Harris sought permission to withdraw her nomination as it was felt the officers should be resident in the same centre. For the conference to he held in: April it was agreed that matters concerning refugees should have preference. Miss Jones reported what the Y.W.C.A. had done towards entertaining small groups of soldiers from the Maori Battalion. Mrs Harris asked that congratulations be conveyed to the Y.W.C'.A. as an affiliated society for this fine piece of community service. The meeting decided to donate £2 to the funds toward further entertainment of the Maoris. _ Mrs W. Bidden Jones, as representative on the special committee to assist with the Fighting Ser vices "Welfare Ap-1 peal, forwarded a- report of proceedings. The action of the president and secretary in forwarding a donation of £5 to this fund was endorsed.
