HERE AND THERE. (By “Nanette.”) Preserve Runner Beans. | Runner beans are cheap and plentiful just now, so it is the time to preserve some for later in the year when green vegetables are scarce and expensive. Cut and string the beans, and place them in a large glass or stone jar, with alternate layers of coarse , salt. Press well down, leave overnight to allow them to sink. Then fill right up to the very top of jar and screw on lid or cover to exclude air. The beans need only be washed in water before cooking. Gifts That Last. Thousands of women in Sweden, who are members of the S.L.K. —Svenska Landstorms Kvinnor—which is similar to the Lotta Svard in Finland, are prepared for non-combatant work in case their country enters the war, according to Mrs M. Hok, an Australian woman who has made her home in Sweden for several years. Attractive Sets. This week a number of local sliqps are opening up their new season’s goods and there is a particularly interesting collection of autumn underwear at the Scotch AVool and Hosiery Shop, the Square. It includes useful two-piece sets of panties with vests to match in silk and wool and all wool, in dainty shades of peach and white. Bleaching Methods. Lemon .juice and rosewater will sometimes remove summer tan and freckles in a few days. It should be dabbed on the skin first tiling each morning. It is a gramophone and a collection of records donated by an old lady who is more than SO years old. It was her late husband’s wedding present to her, and each of the 50 records represents a wedding anniversary. “It lias given me a lot of pleasure.” she said shyly, “and I would like the sailors to have it now.”
