BASKETBALL.

MANAWATU SEASON CLOSES. The conclusion of the Manawatu Basketball Association’s season took place on Saturday afternoon at the Technical School grounds, when a subsidiary handicap competition, with a knock-out for the winners of sections, was won by High School D. There was a large attendance of players and officials, including the patron (Mr W. M. Sexton) and Mrs Sexton, and the Mayoress (Mrs A. E. Mansford) as guest of honour. The games were as follow : First round. —Bunnytliqrpc heat Ramblers; W 7 hakarongo A beat Tech. B, High School D beat AVhnkarongo iB, High School E heat Takaro B. Semi-finals. —Whakarongo A heat Bunnvthorpe; High School D beat High “School E. Final.—High School D heat Wliakarongo A. Close finishes indicated that the handicapping was good, in two games t..c scores being equal, and a point separating the finalists. At the conclusion of play afternoon tea was provided. Miss C. Vautier, president of the Manawatu Association, referred to the interest of the season and congratulated the teams on their play generally. She introduced Mrs Mansford and voiced the appreciation of the association that she had given the tnno to assist in the closing ceremonial. Mrs Mansford presented the Robert Cup for the A grade championship to High School Old Girls A. The Graham Cup was presented to the runners-up, High School A and Bunnythorpc, by Mr Sexton. Miss L. Brown, .a vice-pre-sident, handed the Nash Cun to R.amblers (second grade) and Mr Sinclair (vicc-pres-'dont) presented the Barsanti Cup to the runners-up, W’hakarongo A and Takaro A. The third grade cup was presented to Whakarongo B and Ashhurst by Mrs H. Iff. Scott, Mrs Sexton handing the Tui Cup to Knitex (run-ners-up). Miss Vautier handed the aggregate cup to High School Club, and Mrs Mansford presented the trophy for the subsidiary competition, which had been donated by Mr and Mrs Sinclair, to High School D. Finally bars and

badges were presented to the members < of the representative team by Mrs 1 Mansford. 1 Miss Brown thanked the donors of trophies, Mr Sexton calling for cheers 1 for the president and the referees, and Miss Vautier called for cheers for Miss E. Ross (secretary) for all her work ! behind scenes and in organising the tea arrangements. ( On behalf of the representative team, Miss Joyce Clevoly (captain) presented ; Miss Vautier with a token of appreoialion for all she had done as manager of the team, Miss Vautier making a suitable reply. There were apologies for absence from the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), Mr and Mrs J. A. Nash and Mrs Barsanti. INDOOR MATCH. PUBLIC SERVICE TEAMS. In an exciting game played under American rules in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, the Manawatu Public Service ladies beat Wellington Public Service ladies by ' one goal, the final score being 31— I 29. It was a very fast game, both teams showing great form. Mana watu scored the first goal and maintained a small lead throughout the match. Miss G. Anderson scored some brilliant goals for Wellington in the second half, Misses T. Smith and M. Thomson both gaining points for their team. Misses S. Young, M. Gregory and J. Christian scored for Mn.nawatu. Both team's were well matched in height and play, thus making the game very interesting both to players and snectators. The teams were :-r AVellington.—Misses K. Bowyer, b. Clark, G- Anderson (captain), 1. Smith and M. Thomson. . Manawatu. —Mis«os J. Christian (captain), M. Gregory, S. Young, b. Anderson. J. Johnson; reserve, Miss B. Booker ~ T The referees were Messrs G. 1 Griggs and N. Rees. The Y.M.C.A. men beat the Wellington men by 40 points to 34.
