(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON. Oct. 9. On Thursday evening tho large audience that attended the concert of flic Band of tho Institute for the Blind were accorded a musical treat and were quick to show their appreciation. The arranging of tho concert, and the billeting of the bandsmen was .in the control of the Shannon Women’s Institute. Mr J. T. Bovis, in oxtond- | ing a welcome to the visitors, hoped that their tour would be a successful one and that they would carry with them happy memories of their visit to Shannon. A feature of the programme, apart from the excellent performance of the artists, was the organisation. From the opening item to the end thero was not a delay of any sort, and the manager, Mr C. W. Pilgrim, and the bandmaster. Lieutenant G. W. Bowes, are to be complimented. The varied programme of band items, singing, humour, and instrumental solos, all of a very high standard, were fully appreciated and warmly applauded. The Mangaore Golf Club closed their season on Saturday afternoon. when thero was an attendance of over 50, including a number of representatives of the Buckley Club. Mr G. Smith (president), beforo presenting the trophies won during tho season, referred to the season having been a success socially and financially. The club had not only paid off tho bank overdraft, but would have a credit balance to commence with next, season. He expressed appreciation to Mr J. Kilminstcr for allowing the club to play on his property and to the ladies who had taken charge of the afternoon tea arrangements; also all who had assisted with trophies or in any way. The trophies were presented as follow: —Men’s senior enp, R. Collins; junior cnp. 11. Murrow; Wise cun, C. Singleton: eclectic, R, Harding; ladies’ senior cup, Mrs 11. Murrow; junior cun. Mrs C. Singleton; Gunning trophv. Mr 11. Murrow; eclectic, Miss W. Smith: medals, J. Bovis, B. Clayton, R. Graham, C. Hook, R. Hard-' ing, H. Karcna, and Mesdames H. Murray, Graham, and Murrow. In the evening a dance was held in the Mangaore* Hall and was a fitting finish to successful season. The sudden death of Mr William Carlyle, which took place at the Palmerston. North Hospital on Thursday morning, came as a shock to his family and many friends, ag he was at his work as usual up to the previous Friday. Born in Wellington, Mr Carlyle was "58 years of age, and came to Shannon about 27 years ago, where he was employed in the flaxmilhng industry. Prior to coming to Shannon he was also employed at Te Horo and Linton, He always associated himself with the_ social life of the -town and was keenly interested in school committee work. At the lime of his death ho was secretary of tho School Committee. Besides an invalid wife, he left throe sons—George (Levin). Lindsay (Pukekohe), Walter (Wellington) and throe) daughters—Mrs J. Ward (Levin), Mrs J. Stratford (Auckland, and Mrs M. Smith (Shannon). Mrs E. Spring (Shannon) and Mrs 801 l (Mastcrton) are sisters, and Mr Robert Carlyle (Wellington) are broMr Robert (Palmerston North) and Messnl James and Walter^Carlyle (Wellington) are brothers. The family received a further shock on Saturday afternoon, when word was received of the death of Mrs Joyce Stratford (Auckland). Mrs Stratford had been ill for some time and her death was not unexpected. Much sympathy i* felt for the family, and Mrs Carlyle. Mr C. Trc-mc-wan left for Granity on Friday, where his marriage will take place this week to Miss Helen McDonald.

Both bowling and tennis enthusiasts ar» busy preparing their grounds for opening day this week.
