ITALY PERTURBED
TREND OF WAR. INTERESTS THREATENED. NEW YORK. Sept. 22. The Rome correspondent of the New York Times reported by radio-phone to-day that Central European events moved badly for Italy to-day. There a more vigorous Press campaign about the “absurdity and criminality” of continuing the war, the “criminals” being Britain and France. The war has not touched Italy yet, but if it continues along the present lines vital Italian interests will be involved.
Apart from tile apparently sincere belief that the war lias ceased to have a raison d’etre and humanitarian motives, Italy has material reasons for seeing its end before the Balkans are involved. The news that the final Russian and German division of Poland does not provide a Polish State based on ethnic frontiers is most disturbing to Italy. It means that the Italian suggestions have been ignored and that Russia and Germany are destroying one of Italy’s prime reasons for accepting Poland’s defeat.
