MARTON CLUB’S MEETING

HOMILY TAKES THE HANDICAP.

Six winners were provided by the Awapuni training centre at the Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday, the stable of L. G.. Morris raking .the first three races on the card. The Juvenile Handicap was won by the Ringmaster colt Taitaina, .whoso dam, Lady Bentinek, was a good class sprinter in her day. Wings of Song won the maiden event in hollow fashion, and the Hunting Song gelding looks likely to develop into a top-class sprinter. The Marton Handicap was won ■ by Homily. 'Though not fast, the track was in good order. The totalisator handled £15,767 10s, showing a decrease of £379 on the last spring meeting. Princess Isabel, a mare owned by Air T. A. Duncan, broke her back when she fell in the concluding stages of the steeplechase, during which Lady Callaghan ran off and took ‘Ruaform with her at a critical stage, and the stipendiary steward, Mi; B. N. Sandilands, called a judicial inquiry inio the incident.. The explanation of the rider of Lady Callaghan. T. Tito, was accepted. Richelieu Pearl fell at the home turn in the seventh race and brought down Class 1 form. The respective riders, H. Stewart and J. Williamson (of Awapuni), both apprentices, escaped serious injury, but Williamson bad to receive medical attention. He was saved from grave injury by his skull ,cap, but suffered a cut on the bead, also bruises and shock. An inquiry was held by the judicial committee into the accident. Drawn 9. be was slower to begin than Uvcdalc, Enrich and Silver Shekel drawn in the inside positions and TJvedalo, beginning smartly, soon bad a clear lead from Enrich, Silver Shekel and Sly Girl, but Taitama showed a lot of pace lo run up alongside • Enrich behind the leader in Ibe turn and Miss Hallowmet improved her position. Authoress arid Game Pit began slightly better than the favourite, but he soon ran to the front, and on the turn was making Race Away, Authoress, Game Pit and La Coquette all do their best. Once in line Wings of Song came right away, and without being extended won by several lengths from Authoress, who just held on from Colossal Chief, who came from well back. HACK HURDLES, of £135. Except for a brief period in the middle stage*, he was always in front, and, though Sir Nigel joined him over the last live furlongs, Hunting Lore strode right away in the concluding stages from Sir Nigel and Sunbeam with Earl Colossus next, Chat was always well back and unable to make any impression. Eurotas began smartly and endeavoured to win ail the way, but Noble Fox ran up bandy on the turn, others prominent being Shining Hours, Colincamps and Ramlcli. Homily ran up fast down the bade stretch and joined Solaria in the load, with The Bigot. Play Ori, Royal Star II and Flying Acre most prominent of the others, Winsome Lu improved her position from the half-mile, and in' the straight Homily drew away from Solaria, who just failed to gain a clear-cut second from Winsome Lu, who got up bn the post for a dead-beat.
