The Prime Alinister (Sir Joseph Ward) was on the. eve of landing in New Zealand after visiting England for the Imperial Defence Conference. Since the recent termination of the San Francisco-Auckland steamer service mails had been despatched from New Zealand via Suez. The system was recognised as being too slow for the Dominion’s requirements.
