GOLDEN WEDDING

About 40 relatives and a number of very old friends foregathered at the Parish Hall on Saturday to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs W. Loader, of Ross Street, who have been residents of the town for over 40 years. The gathering proved a most happy recognition of Mr and Mrs Loader’s attainment and they received many congratulations. A toast list was honoured, under the direction of a grandson, Mr R. A. McNeil, the toast of the “The Bride and Bridegroom” being proposed by Mr S. Turnbull, an old friend, who remarked in the course of his speech that he had proposed the samp toast at. the wedding of a daughter of Mr and Mrs Loader (Mrs H. N. McNeil), and a niece (Mrs P. R. Spackman). Mr Loader responded. In the course of the gathering Mrs Loader related how she arrived in the Bush district by bullock-wagon and how, in the summer months, the clearing of the land by removing stumps and trees was continued on a number of occasions until 3 a.m. On her honeymoon she rode by horse-back through the Manawatu Gorge with her husband.

Mrs Loader sang “The Wishing Cap,” a song which she had sung as a girl of 18, and received many complimentary. references to the perform- 1 ance. . The two-tier cake was decorated with 50 gold-coloured roses. The couple received a number of beautiful presents to mark the anniversary. Added enjoyment was given the company by the presentation of items by Mrs B. Schroder (song), Hugh McNeil (song), and Mrs W. Churchill, of Lower Hutt (pianoforte solo). . OBITUARY. MR W. BOUSTEAD.. The death occurred on Saturday morning of Mr W. Boustead, of Vogel Street, who had resided in the Woodville ■ district for about ten years. Mr Boustead had not been in the best ol health for about the last 18 months. He was taken to the Dannevirke Hospital on Friday, but death intervened on the following morning. KUMEROA TENNIS. CLUB. Although the weather was cloudy, rain held off on Saturday afternoon, when the opening of the season of the Kumeroa Tennis Club was celebrated. There were a number of visitors from neighbouring clubs and the play proved most enjoyable. The president (Mr I. R. Mackay) declared the season open and voiced an apology for absence from the club’s patron (Mr W. J. Miller). Mr Mackay welcomed the members of other clubs and 6aid the Kumeroa players were looking forward to attending the openings of these. Representatives present from other clubs, who replied to the welcome, were Miss L. Richards (Woodlands Road), and Messrs L. Haines (Mangamutu) and C. E. Maclean (Woodvillc). It was decided to hold a dance in the evening and there were a considerable number of dancers in attendance. Amplified music was supplied by Mr B. Clieyne, and an extra was provided by Mr J. Sargent. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs W. J-. Smyth and Mr L. Hills. The M.C.' was Mr Pi- Miller. Mesdames J. Little,' W. Smyth, L. Hills and Miss P. Lynch were in charge of the supper arrangements.

PERSONAL.

The funeral of the late Mr Oliver Johnson took place at the picturesque little cemetery a.t Mangatainoka on Saturday afternoon. The cortege left the Woodville Methodist Church •at Pahiatua, where an impressive service was conducted by Rev. A. Blakcmore, minister of the Cuba Street Methodist Church, Palmerston North, and Rev. C. M. Roberts, of Sanson’, and formerly of Pahiatua. Mr Roberts paid a very high tribute to the late Mr Johnson, both in connection with his work in the interests of the Church and for the welfare of the community in .general. 'Both gentlemen conducted the service at the graveside, and subsequently the Foresters’ Lodge service was delivered by- members of the Pahiatua Lodge.
