PRAYERS FOR PEACE.
CARDINAL HINSLEY’S PLEA. LONDON, Sept. 11. Large congregations in the principal churches yesterday included many men in uniform. All civilians carried gas masks. Arrangements had been made to deal with possible air raid alarms, retreats being provided. The Archbishop of Westminster (Cardinal liinsley) in a pastoral letter, entreated Divine 1 wisdom to guide the Government and to give strength and victory to those fighting for justice and peace. He also urged intercession for the Pope, who, he said, had spent himself in efforts to avert war. “However one may be disposed to give the cheek to the smiter and the body to the persecutor,” added Cardinal Hinsley, “we cannot stand by idly and allow our neighbour to be enslaved and done to death. Everyone should unstintedly serve his country for the common good.” There was continuous intercession a.t Westminster Abbey for peace. People prayed all day at the Unknown Warrior’s Tomb.
