CHALLENGE WITHDRAWN. NEW ZEALAND SHIELD. A motion that the challenge against Auckland for the New Zealand Challenge Shield be withdrawn was moved by Mr E. McLachlan, at a meeting of tho executive of the Manawatu Hockey Association, held last evening. “We have been beaten easily by Wellington and Wairarapa, tho latter being a minor association,” he said. It was tinfair to expect the players to perforni creditably, when they had such a. short time in which to train. Mr J. D. N. McDonald moved an amendment that if the team performed well against Wairarapa, in the return match, it should travel to Auckland for the challenge. The amendment was lost by six votes to two and tho motion was carried.

_ Those present at the meeting were Messrs L. Martin (in the chair), McLachlan, W. Gough, McDonald, A. C. Eade, J. Gallichan, K. Struthers, 1). Wilton, R. Beale and the secretary (Mr R. A, Brace). It was dec.ded not to enter a women’s team in the New Zealand women’s tournament, to be held at Blenheim. The matter of affiliating with, the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association was deferred until the end of the year.

The report of Mr H. Buyers, manager of the Manawatu team which visited Wanganui recently, was received. Tho reports of Mr McDonald were received dealing with the Wellington matches.

Permission was granted the Boys’ High School senior B team to travel to Wanganui next week to play in tho intcr-school hockey tournament. The best wishes of the executive were extended to them.

The Wairarapa Association wrote expressing its thanks to the executive for the way it had entertained its representative teams. The tentative dates (September 23 and 30) were submitted by the'Wairarapa Association for the return representative match, the latter date being dec idl'd upon provided the grounds are available in the Wairarapa. September 2 was the date selected for the Winter Shield match against Taranaki at Ha worn for the players under 21 years of age. The same date was also' chosen for the match between the Manawatu ladies’ team and the Wairarapa team. N. Northover was granted permission to play for Broadway; lie was a former member of the Boys’ High School team, but has now lett school. The registration of H. J. Bone with the Phoenix Club was also granted. Mr W. D. Philip wrote congratulatingl the association on promoting representative matches for the senior B and junior grade players. FIXTURES.
