GAY SCENE

COLLEGE ST. SCHOOL BALL. CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINMENT. The. colourful and varied costumes of scores of children blended to present a gay scene, last; night, at the A. and .I’. Hall at tho bhowgroutids. The occasion was the annual ball of the College Street School, and although the attendance was not up to last year’s standard, the efficient organisation with which the function was conducted and the splendid support of the parents and children combined to make it an outstanding success. The children executed their dances very attractively, and the positional knowledge of the performers in some of the more complicated dances indicated thorough training by the teachers, to whom much credit for the splendid performance must go. One of tho most effective items was given by tho girls in the dance “Newcastle.” Mr H. G. Mills (chairman of the committee), during an interval in the proceedings, officially opened the ball and extended a welcome to parents and other visitors. “\Vhen I look round the hall and see all the happy faces,” said Mr Mills, “it makes me fully realise that the ball is well worth-while.” He advised the children to keep their smiling faces as they went through life.

A tremendous amount of work was entailed in the organisation of the ball, the speaker continued, and the voluntary services of those concerned to make it a success were greatly appreciated. The committee had received the generous support of the headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) and the teachers of the school, and this was greatly valued. He assured them that they had the co-operation of the committee in this paid any other matter connected -with Mie school. Without the help of the ladies’ committee also, it would not have been possible to have made the ball a sucess. Mr Mills referred appreciatively to the assistance given by the parents, who had been very generous with donations of foodstuffs. On the call of the chairman, the children gave cheers for all who had assisted, and then, at the call of one of the head boys, three cheers were given for the chairman.
