BROWN SHIELD CHALLENGE. (By “Centre-Half.”) Manawatu is to be called upon to defend the Brown Shield against Hjtwke’s Bay on September 16. Training.—-The original sixteen players selected (supplemented by G. Laing, Hovers) are to be put into training forthwith under the control of Mr It. Stewart. . B team. —The local executive are trying to arrange a match against a representative Wanganui team as a cur-tain-raiser to the shield game. Playing area. —The experience of the past few weeks makes it imperative that another ground be found on which to play the important Brown Shield match. It would be a tragedy for Manawatu to lose the shield upon a protest without ever defending it, and with a Rugby representative' game on that day, the Showgrounds will not be available.
Club football.—The Thistle Club are trying to obtain a visit by a Wellington senior team for September 2, the day of the Chatham Cup final.
