Renewed interest is now being taken in the local Girl'Guides movement. At a ceremony. Inst week, a number of Guides and Brownies were enrolled by the officer in charge. Miss J. Beattie. There is a good deal of sickness in the district at the present time, and instances have been reported of several members of one family being laid aside with influenza. Contributors of musical selections at a gift afternoon function held by the ladies' guild of Holy Trinity Church were Mesdames R. R. Johnston, J. Peebles, W. Hanlon and Miss E. Bailey. The winner of a competition compiled bv Mrs Andrews was Mrs C. E. Cunningham. Mrs It. G. Smith presided. Two of the six units of State rental houses in "Woodvillo arc expected to be ready for occupation very, shortly. tbo finishing touches in the interior being in hand, and in due course there will be official notification of the allocation to prospective tenants. For the six units it is understood there were nearly 'JO applicants. Prize-winners at recent 'Foresters' card tournaments have been Messrs IT. N. McNeil, ('. H. Hares, ('. Ware. C. Vowell, Mrs Reid and Mrs Burlace. In tile R.S.A. tournament., last week, the trophies were secured by Miss M. Peebles. Mrs Reid, Mrs Burlace, and Mr J. P. Goodwin. A complaint that has been before the Borough Council on previous occasions was made on Friday, when Cr. J. Sullivan stated that lie had learned from the foreman that -wandering stock during the night bad damaged shrubs. Cr Sullivan advocated more severe penalties on the owners of stray stock. Action for trespass and damages was proposed by Cr H. Galbraith. The Mayor deplored the fact that the council was not receiving the help from the public it should eet in this matter. He agreed that a heavier penalty should be indicted in future, and it was decided that an intimation to this effect be made to the borougb solicitor.
