YOUNG FARMERS

FIELD DAY AT BULLS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BULLS. July 17. The ofTorts of members of tlie Bulls : District Young Farmers’ Club met with unqualified success when a field day was held recently on the property of Mr C. j E. Vile, “Puknnui,” Bulls, though un I pleasant weather no doubt affected the attendance. All the events went oil' smoothly, and were well eontosted, .which spoke well for tho efficiency of the stewards, who all worked well. ICocn interest was dispfeiyed by the- young farmers, while older persona found much to interest them, particularly in tho demonstrations, and their remarks on thn club’s activities were very eulogistic. Cold weather made the sawing contest a popular event, and the performance of the winners, Messrs Smith Bros., Mat-ton, was a very good one. An old-timers’ contest, • resulted in a win for Messrs Torvoy Bros., who later gave an exhibition, getting through their log in 16*ee. The main events were the dog trials, the response being very good, and although the standard of work was not very high competitors appreciated tho opportunity of giving their dogs ft run. Mr C. B. Anderson (in the unavoidable ab sence of the club chairman, Mr S. G. Avery, who sent an apology) look tjie op portunity of welcoming the visitors, amongst those who came from a distance being Mr C. DmgwnlL Wanganui District Young Farmers’ Clubs’ secretary. lie thanked Mr Vile for placing his farm and stock open for their use for demonstrations, and for assisting In judging and demonstrating. He also thanked the other judges and demonstrators, who had travelled some distance to give their services; Messrs 11. Bowen, J. G. Wilson and R. O. Dalrymple. for the loan of stock ; Mr .T. Simpson, for carriage ol slock; and Mr R. Cole, for generally assisting. lie also thanked members .of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union for (heir assistance, which had lightened the work considerably. Mr Anderson said that the day would he a great fillip to the club and the organisation, and lie called upon the young men to show their appreciation, which they did. Air Vile, m reply, said that it gave him the greatest pleasure to do anything possible for the young farmers, and ho wished them well in their future activities. Other judges and demonstrators also offered to give their service on future, occasions. Captain 13. Barrington, recruiting officer of the Defence Department, was present, and spoke briefly on the recruiting campaign, afterwards interviewing a number of young men who were interested. (Judge and Demonstrator; Mr C. K. Vile). —O. 13. Anderson 120 points (maximum) 1; B. Palmer, 111 points, 2; S. Last-llarris, 85. points, 3. Also competed: C. L. Grace, K. I-ield, J. Gibbons, W r . Bowen and G. Prichard. Romney Judging. (Judge and Demonstrator- Mr W r . Morton, JTunterville). S Last-Harris 1, C. B. Anderson 2, J. Gibbons 3. Also competed: W. Bowen, N. 11. Amon. C. L. Grace, G. Prichard and J. G. Wilson. Local Dog Trial. —T. Torrey 1, J. McLean 2, D. Grace and G. Torrey (equal) 3. Also competed : K. Scott. G. Woods, D. Stent. J. Preston. A. Torrey, B. Coleman, A Brightwell and Rex Homes. Log Sawing.—lst. heat: Smith Bros 1. Also competed: J. Palmer and S. LaSfHarris. \V. Bamberg and J. Young. _ and B. and T. Palmer. Second heat; C. B. Anderson and E. J. Kilgour-Carter 1. Also competed: G. Prichard and J G. Wilson, H AVebbor and G. Ellery, N. 11. Amon and A. Young, and R. Simpson and V. Bowen. Smith Bros, won the final in 19ecc.. Anderson and Carter taking 27scc. The' final item was a demonstration on a hack and a Clvdesdale horse by Mr E. Ilockon, of Feilding, this proving most instructive and interesting.
