A lecture on modern life in Germany was enjoyed. It is difficult to realise that in thwo so-called enlightened days there arc still places in the world where freedom of speech can only be indulged in by those who do not fear death, as the penalty for unfavourable criticism. To probe beneath the outward isigns of happiness and apparent prosperity in Germany to-day is likely to give the inquirer an unpleasant- shock. One finds that all is not well when the methods of dictatorship are laid hare. Mrs Somerset, who was presented with a posy of anemones by Muriel Prujean, spoke briefly on the part played by women, the homemakers in life. She mentioned the importance of books to widen one’s knowledge of the necessity of keeping abreast of the tremendous changes that were daily taking place. Women might, not. be deeply interested, but they were very vitally concerned and should seek to know and understand what was taking place. Mrs W. Duncan thanked both speakers for their thought-provoking addresses. The keilding Community Centre, being the first of its kind in New Zealand, gave Apiti members the opportunity to enjoy their meeting in a unique setting. Both members and the High School girls fully appreciated the occasion. Afternoon tea was served and members enjoyed personal contact with Mr and Mrs Somerset. PERSONAL.
