FALSE PRETENCES CHARGES. Per Press Association. CHI!ISTCTJ [JRCJ‘I, Juno «. Described by Detective-Sergeant Sinclair as “simply and purely a false pretences artist wit'll a very plausible and confident maimer.” Robert Thomas Roberts, farm labourer, aged 50, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to IS months’ gaol with hard labour by Mr E. G. Levvey. S.M.. today. Eight charges of the false presentation of chccpics to <t total of £54, drawn on various city hanks, were admitted by Robert's, and on each of three charges he was sentenced to six mouths’ gaol with hard labour, the sentences to cumulative. Detective-Sergeant Sinclair said Roberts had obtained goods valued at £lO 10 s 2d and money amounting to £J.'j Ms 10. The goods could not he returned to their owners and accused had no money when arrested. “Since 11)17 Roberts has had 51 charges of false pretences preferred against him. and he has served gaol sentences totalling twelve and a ball years, as well as a period of relormativo detention. He is simply and purely a false pretences artist with a very plausible and confident manner,” added Mr Sinclair.

“One tiling I can do is to slop you from preying on the public.” said the Magistrate in passing sentence. On the remaining live charges Roberts was convicted and discharged.
