Stewart memorial scheme wa.s being proceeded with on a modified plan.

The Alnnawalii Automobile Association wrote asking tor particulars ol grades, etc., oil roads in the county. It was decided to supply the inlormat ion.

The Rublic Works Department. wroLc agreeing to the appointment ol Mr .1. R. .lepsotl as clerk of works on the Reid's Line. bridge contract.- —Received.

A circular letter was received from the Ala.in Highways Hoard in connection with the annual review of main highways. Air X. W. Retiree was given permission to lay a water pipe across Taomii Road. RATft ROLL TRANSFERS.

Reference was made to the sharp corner at the dried milk factory on the Hiinii.yUiorpo-Ashhurst Road. It was stated that the building was sil till ted on the edge ot the road and there was an urgent, need for improvements to he elieeted, and possibly a new road built to provide a wide curve at the comer.

The chairman, while unable to sav what should lie done about, the problem, mentioned that he knew that the Rublie Works Department had been carrying out surveys in connection with the railway level crossing at Hunnythorpe, and it might he its intention to deal with the road ques tion at the same time.

“There is one thing to which I consider we should draw the attention of highways inspectors, and that is the number of bicycles, without lights on the Aorangi Road at night.” commented the dmirinan. wlm added that the practice was unfair and dangerous to motorists, who wore asked to bear an additional strain in having fo watch for unlighled cyclists. The chairman admitted that the inspectors were active, hut he thought their attenion should be drawn to this mutter.

The chairman made these remarks when a letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport asking for co-operation in distributing leaflets to motorists asking for greater care on roads. The council agreed to give every assistance. The chairman was granted leave of absence in view of his proposed trip abroad and councillors took an opportunity to wish him a pleasant voyage.
