WELL-KNOWN MARINER.
CAPTAIN GIFFORD PASSES. Per Press Association. ■WELLINGTON, June 8. The death occurred last night of Captain A. G. Gifford, who has been well-known in connection with shipping actiivties in ‘Wellington for the last 42 years. He conducted a school for navigation and trained hundreds of officers. Ho was an adjuster ol ships’ compasses and, until a few weeks ago, was engaged in his usual duties on ships in the harbour. A native of the Shetland Islands, he went to sea while still a hov and, before retiring from it, served with both the Shaw Savill, and the Union Steamship Companies. He leaves a wife, two daughters and a son.
