BRIGHT AMATEUR BOUTS. OPENING OF GYM NASI UAL Held jointly by the Alanawatu Boxing Association and the Palmerston North AY resiling Association, a bright amateur tournament-, which was largely attended, was the opening fixture, last evening, in the gymnasium at this centre. The standard of the boxing was particularly good. The president of the AA'rcstling Association, Mr G. AYatchorn, stated that when the mat sport was first started at this centre eight to ten years ago, the Alanawatu Boxing Association had generously made available its facilities at a nominal fee. and it «as hoped one day to have the two ring sports under tlie one administrative control. He paid a tribute to tlie services of Mr J. Purvcs as ring manager, Messrs Downes and O’Keefe (boxing instructors) and Air C. Matson (wrestling instructor). He said tlic owner of the premises, Mr A. Hopwood, had met the Wrestling Association very generously in providing gymnasium facilities.

Alarsliall (Wanganui) 11.7. —This was n lively engagement-. Cudbv’s height making him awkward for his opponent to handle. The bout was drawn. BONING. D. Jones (Palmerston North) 3.7 v. ,T. Peiiow (Palmerston North) 6.7. — Pei low. leading frequently with his left, easily had the belter of tlie opening exchanges, hut Jones fought back gamely, although Peiiow, boxing coolly, was a shade too fast for him, and was declared tlie winner on points. AA'liittingion set a merrv pace and scored more often than his opponent, hut in tlic second session rail into one or two hard lelts which steadied him up a little.
