A rumour that the British Ambassador to China (Sir Archibald Kerr) has advised Marsha) Chiung Kai-shek to resign and pave the way lor peace has circulated in the Tokio stock exchange causing a general rise in prices. A Shanghai message says that Sir Archibald, lias officially denied that the peace suggestion has been made, to .Marshal Chiaiig Kai-shek. PROTECTION REQUESTED. BRITISH PROPERTY. Received Juno 9. 9-15 a.in. SHANGHAI, June 8. The British Consul-General lias requested the Japanese to take immediate measures to protect British property, particularly the suppression of the anti-British agitation at Rootling, and tlie prevention of the intimidation of Chinese workers in tiie British mills there. SHOTS AT ’PLANE. JAPANESE ALLEGATION. TOKIO, June S. The Domei News Agency reports that a British cruiser tired 10 shots at a Japanese aeroplane flying east “000 feet above the South China Sea toward Hong Kong. Several shells burst within 100 yards of the ’plane, which was not damaged. The pilot declares that lie sighted the cruiser in the vicinity of Swntnw and clearly recognised the British flag painted on the .side. The Japanese authorities declare they take a serious view of the shooting at the ’plane, but .British naval circles have no knowledge of the incident. ULTIMATUM TO RESIDENTS. The Japanese have .sent a further ultimatum to residents in the British Concession at Tientsin, threatening to erect harriers and isolate the Concession unless the murderers of the pu'ppet Chinese Governor are handed over before Saturday. A 'Tokio message says the Japanese spokesman declared that wellknown liners were not stopped in Chinese waters. Japan was not deviating from her policy of respecting and not interfering with the peaceful commerce ol third Rowers, but doubtful ships were liable to be examined. COLLEAGUE DIES. MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. SHANGHAI, June 8. Alt Englishman, Air H. McAlister, who belongs to the same firm as Air Tinkler, is reported to have died in mysterious circumstances. He was found collapsed over a. table in .the mill office, and lie did not regain consciousness. A preliminary examination lias revealed no signs of violence.
