RECORD CROWD
ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION. REMARKABLE SCENES. Received Juno 9,10. to a.m. WASHINGTON. June 8. It is estimated that 000,000 people lined the mile-long Pennsylvania Avenue, exceeding by 200,000 the record crowd that witnessed Mr Roosevelt’s inauguration in 1933. The crowd enthusiastically cheered, waved, and shouted as the King drove by with the President. The Queen ’was in the second ear with Mrs Roosevelt and held tip a sunshade as the temperature was in the nineties. Because Washington is sweltering in a heat wave, neither the Queen nor Mrs Roosevelt wore the 1 rocks made from American and Empire wool respectively. Ten flving fortresses and 42 fighters added their note to the rumble of tanks and the roar of the crowd. Lining the route were 0000 police and 500 firemen while Secret Service agents ran alongside the Royal cars occasionally jumping on to the running-boards ,P. r ®" viding a touch strange in British eves. Tt was reported earlier from Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) tliat for _ the first time in history some investitures took place on a moving train. Shortly after entering the United States the Kin< r conferred the K.C.B. on Sir Ronjild = Lindsav and the K.C.V.O. on Captain Alan Lascellcs (acting-private secretary) and the C.V O. on M' George Stewart (Press liaison ofhNhc occasion also marked the fust time in recent years that honours hod been bestowed on foreign soil. Hu Majesty was actuated by the desire to enable the recipients to wear t ie decorations at President Roosevelt s roccption to-day.
