REPERTORY SOCIETY.
MASQUERADE DANCE. - As a celebration of tlie successful season of the production “They Came By Night,” the Alanawatu Repertory Society, last night, held a very enjoyable masquerade and fancy dress dance in the Empire Hall. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and nearly everyone wore fancy costume, so that a colourful and delightfully varied scene was presented. Under the direction of Alensrs A. Hcan and N. Af. Nash, the hall was transformed bv a most efiective and appropriate decorative scheme. 'I he orchestra was seated on the _ stage, which represented a garden, with the garden backcloth from “The Skin Game” as a background, against which shrubs and trees were arranged. Creepers were entwined along a balcony railing in front of the stage, and coloured spotlights lit the scene. Rainbow streamers were arranged as Oriental lampshades in the body of the ball, and tlie walls were decorated with light and dark blue streamers and greenery, also photograph's and posters of all the society’s productions from “Tobias and the Angel” to “They Came By Night.” The same decorative scheme was carried through to the supper room, and an added theatrical touch was supplied by pieces of scenery from various productions. The committee responsible for tlie excellent arrangements consisted of the following:—Messrs T. Al. N._ Rodgers, who was dressed as All* Neville Chamberlain ; A 7. Hcan (Spanish). t A. Coles (Alexican bandit), N. Al. Nash (Chequers). Dr. A. de Berry (Tyrolean), Afesdanies J. Davidson (Spanish), F. Gatlcv (wine rose brocaded satin), Afisses K. Birnie (Portia), N. AVoocfhou.se (Victorian), and Alisses R. Lees (Spanish) and E. Hull (G'.psv), jointsecretaries. Prizes for the best costumes were awarded to Afrs G. AV. Callander (Mae West) and Air At. If. Oram (Scarlet Pimpernel). The president (Mr oram)t?Jnnde a presentation to Air F. Cousins (who was dressed as a raiah). conveying to him tlie thanks of the cast of “They Came By Night” for hb work as producer. Afr I\. Strothers read a poem composed for the occasion, and Air Cousins briefly replied. It is an excellent precaution to have covers over your upholstery. When fixing a cover on to a chair-back slip a sheet of blotting-paper under the cover. It will absorb any grease.
