Constable D. W. Shannon, of Auckland, has been transferred to Palmerston North to replace Constable C. Matthew, who has gone to AYliangai.iomona. Dir H. Watkinson, district engineer of the Public Works Department, was re-elected chairman of the No. 9 District Highways Council at its meeting in Palmerston North yesterday. Police Sergeant J. B. Kearton, of Wellington, inis been relieving at Palmerston North. Constable P. J. DlcEntee, of Palmerston North, is now at Wanganui recuperating from an illness. Mr G. Petherick yesterday completed 35 years as a member of the Wellington Licensing Committee. The term is stated to be easily a record for long service, in this direction, in the Dominion. Chairman of the Whakatane County Council tor 27 years from 1910, the death has occurred of Mr Walter Reid, aged 72. Ho took part in nearly every public activity in the district in his long residence of 52 years. Dir W. N. Scarle, youngest son of Dir N. E. IScarle, of Oainaru, has been elected to the honorary staff of Westminster Hospital, Loudon, as an obstretrie surgeon. AVestminster Hospital was recently rebuilt at a cost of £1 ,- 000,000, and was opened by Their Majesties, the King and Queen, last April. Dir 11. Sanies, who was recently elected unopposed a trustee of the Makerua Drainage Board in place of Dir AV. J. Ross, who resigned, was welcomed by the chairman (Dir H. Seifert) at the monthly meeting of the board to-day. Dir Seifert said all had been sorry to lose Dir Ross's services, but he felt that Mr Sanies would bo able to discharge his duties as honourably as his predecessor had done. The death lias occurred of a wellknown and highly-respected resident of Levin, Dir Frank ltoutley. He was active in public lilc, being a member of the ilorowhenua A. and P. Association the Levin Racing Club, the Levin branch of the R.S.A., and the Levin Bowling Club. Born in Kilhampton, Devonshire, Dir Routley came to the Dominion as a young man, and followed farming pursuits in the Taranaki district and later removed to Taihape, where he was similarly engaged for many years. He rendered active servic in the Great AA’ar with the Otago Regiment, and on his return went to Levin, where he had lived ever «.inee. He is survived by Mrs Routiei ami .o infant children.
