LONGBURN

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BONGBUItN, June 6. On Wednesday afternoon the members of the Longburn Women’s Institute and friends gathered at the homo of lMrs Zurcher to honour Miss V. Zurcher, a foundation member, who is shortly to be married. Among those present were Mrs Alderslcy (Palmerston North) and Mrs Hills, “Tc Wanaka,” and Mr Wickham (Stratford). A beautiful tromsscau and numerous wedding gifts were on view. Competition* were indulged in and after the serving of afternoon tea Mrs A. l’icrard (president) took the opportunity of presenting Miss Zurcher with a half mirror as a mark of esteem and appreciation, also extending good wirihci* for her future happiness and prosperity. Mrs Rowland al*o paid a tribute to which Miss Zurcher replied. Musical honours brought a happy occasion to a close.

On Thursday evening last Miss Zurcher was tendered a gift evening by members of the Methodist Church, Lengburn. There was* a large number present and a most, enjoyable time was spent. Games and i songs were indulged in and numerous presentations made testifying to the high ersteem in which Mitt Zurcher is held bv her many friends in the surrounding districts. On behalf of the Church, members Mrs Birch presented a silver cake dish; on behalf of the Sunbeam Club Mrs Davey presented kitchen scalct, and from the Sunday School Miss Zurcher received a bedroom clock and vase/ The opening of numerous parcels revealed many useful gifts. Feeling reference to Miss Zurcher’s impending departure from the district wag expressed. She has been a faithful member of the church and organitt for some years. Both Miss Zurcher and Mr Wickham replied and they were accorded musical honours.

[ A jolly surprise party was held at the residence of Mr D. Fabling, Longburn, on Wednesday evening last to mark the occasion of his eighty-fourth birthday. Dancing and community singing were indulged in, the latter being led by Mr N. Cruden on the bagpipes and Mr AT. Reid on the piano-accordian. On behalf of the guests Mr J. Petersen conveyed birthday greetings to Mr Fabling. musical honours being accorded him, Mr Fabling suitably replying. A beautiful birthday cake made hv Airs W. Prentice was piped in by Mr Cruden. The following items were contributed. —Songs MW Harvey, Messrs D. Fabling, and J. Peterson, tap dance Mr Cross, cccntric dance, Mosdames J. Petersen and If. Prentice Highland

dances, Mcsdaines Reid and Cascv. Among those present were .Mr and Mrs Cross, Mr and Mrs J. Petersen, Mr and Mrs W. Prentice, Mr and Mrs H. Prentice, Mr and Mrs Casev, Mr and Mrs P. Richardson, Air and Mrs M. Reid, Air and Airs Rodgers, Mrs S. Ilarvcy, and Misses A. Christensen and K. Prentice. Thanks were conveyed to the host and hostess, Alt' and Mrs Cross, for an enjoyable _ evening which was brought to a close with the singing of “Aid Lang Syne.”
