EXTRACTS FRO At “STANDARD.” JUNE 8,1909. After the official opening of the New ZealaiuE'Parliameut by the Gov-ernor-General a resolution of regret at the passing of Air Hone Hoke, who had done much good work for the Native race while a member, was carried. There had been a good demand lor sections at Aianawatu Heads, and at a meeting oi the Paxton Harbour Hoard the question of the settlement of tlie seaside was discussed. A number of people had been erecting cottages on land held under a monthly tenure from the Marino Department. The land was now part of the Harbour Hoard endowment, and that Ixid.v p.oposed to cut it up into quarter-acre sections and offer them at public auction. the leases being for a term of < years, with periodical revaluations. The United States Government was encouraging the investment of American capital in Chinese railways with a view to securing greater diplomatic influence and an extension of trade. The Pohangina bridge had been closed to traffic in order that a damaged span might be repaired, and vehicles were thus obliged to use the ford.
