OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM LUMSDEN. The death of AH William Lumsdcn, of Feilding, occurred on Saturday following a brief illness. Air Linnsden, who was a returned soldier, was well-known in farming circles, having been engaged as a stud shepherd for the past 28 years, partly in the service of the estate of the late E. Short at Parorangi, Feilding, and Mr 11. Burrell, of Cheltenham, his last position being with Air AV. Price, of Kimboiton Road, Feilding. Mr Lumsdcn was the youngest son of the late Air and Airs Charles Lumsden and was horn in Nesbit-Wooler, Northumberland, England. He came to New Zealand some 30 years ago and his knowledge of sheep soon became i known. Ho won the confidence of the prominent breeders referred to, and on occasion when new blood was required for their studs Afr Lumsden was sent to England to make selections. Mr Lumsden, who never married, was a member of the Manchester Alasonie Lodge. He also took an active interest in the local branch of the R.S.A.. and his genial nature won for him many friends who -will regret his passing.

AH Janies Lumsden. of Palmerston North, is a brother and Misses Mary and Evelyn Lumsden. schoolteacher at the Rnngiotu and Eoxton Schools respectively, are his nieces. ATiss JLumsden, of Feilding, is a sister. AIRS B. V. REEVE. The ninny friends of Afrs Eortlin Violet Reeve of AYeld Street, Feilding, would regret to learn of her passing on April 11. While resting in the afternoon she passed away. Mrs Reeve was a colonist of long standing. She arrived in Auckland from London with her father in 1859 as a child of 3 years. Her mother died at her birth ; her father, the late Mr Pearce Phillips, was a schoolmaster. In 1879 she was married to AH AV. .T. Reeve in Christchurch, and subsequently Afr Reeve was Clerk of the Court in Palliating AVliangnrei, Stratford and Feilding, his death occurring at Feilding some 20 years ago.

A brother of the late Air Reeve (Rev. T. Reeve) was the first minister of the Feilding Methodist Church, in 1873, and, incidentally, was the first minister of any Church to hold a service in the town. Airs Reeve was a particularly devoted member of the present congregation and possessed the fundamental qualities of Christian womanhood that go deeper than matters of creed or place of worship, and she will he long remembered by those proviiogod to have known her best for her kindness and patient tolerance, and unfailing sympathy with all in trouble or in need. She was a member of all the charitable organisations of her church and in AVhangarei was president of the W.C.T.U. Her interest in that society was shown also in Feilding.

Of tiie eight children of the marriage, one daughter Olive, and three sons predeceased their parents, the sons having been killed in the Great War. The remaining son. Air Wilfred Reeve, also served in the Great AVer as a naval officer and is now at. Essendon, near .Melbourne, where he instructs air pilots in the principles of navigation. Two daughters are married in Australia and another is Airs A. H. Bogle, of Wanganui. Afr A. Reeve, a well known caricaturist in London, and Mr Gordon Tingle, n recent Rhodes Scholar from New Zealand now at Oxford, ate two of Airs Reeve’s grandchildren. The funeral, which took place on Thursday from the Methodist Church. Feilding, was preceded by a service conducted by Rev. J. H. Allen, who paid a gracious tribute to Air Reeve’s Christian work, and sympathised with the relatives in their bereavement. The pallbearers were Afessrs A. 11.
