FEILDING-HALCOMBE ROAD
IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED. Starting at Knight’s cutting, in front of Mr Rcntoul’s property on the Halcom.be Road, much work is beingdone in cutting away hanks and altering the road alignment by fillings, preparatory to the sealing of the highway next year. The work covers a distance of two miles and with the aid of modern, machinery the contractors, a Feilding firm, have already dislodged and removed 4300 cubic yards of spoil between Knight’s cutting and Air M. D. Colquhoun’s corner. The old highway has been deviated and sharp bends removed to be replaced bv easy curves. In 10 days 44 chains of road work have been completed, ready for metalling. At Colqiihoim’s corner, the road lias taken a new course and the old right-angle bend has been eliminated. AVI ion the sealing is done next summer the bitumen will extend to within three miles of Halcombe and will end at MclAoncll’s bridge. The whole job is to cost £6OOO. For the purpose of allowing the new road formation to consolidate, the work is being pushed ahead with all speed while the weather is favourable, and scoops, bull-dosers, etc., are in constant use.
For traffic the highway is at present rough, but it is easily negotiable at reduced speed.
