WOODVILLE BEATEN

DEWAR CLP FOOTBALJ

The Mangatainnka Rugby team on Saturday were successful in winning the Dewar Cup from the Woodville Club, who had held the cup continuously tor four years. Mangatainoka won by eight points to throe on a ground' which was very hard. Play was unfinished generally, as is to bo expected at this stage of the season’s play, but the winners, though two men short, were greatly superior in tactics and in understanding between the backs and forwards. Woodville had the advantage in the scrums, but lost in the majority of the line-outs. The Woodville back combination, who previously had been untried, had difficulty in getting started, and lacked support from the forwards. The teams were:

Woodville (blue and black). —G. S Bolton (captain), Skittrup. R._ Me Gregor, Gilmour, E. McNeil. K. Hutchins, J. Bryson, Reside, W. McKinley, L. Stewart, V. Bircha.ll, Collins Hutchings, C. E. Maclean, L. Pil ciier.

Mangatainoka (black). —J. Tait, E. Hollis, J. AlcDougal, D. Bicknell. R. Hunt, S. Staples, E. Lett (captain), L*. Guinnane, G. Cotter, B. Forbes, T. Upston. B. Fergus, .J. Reichenbaeh. The ball was kicked off by Mangatainoka, who played from tho eastern end. They followed up to attack in Woodville's twenty-five, where play remained for some minutes before reverting to half-way. Following a series of line-outs, a kick through was chased by AlcDougal, who easily penetrated the defence, and scored near the posts Lett converting. AAoodville retaliated with forward rushes, and kept play in the visitors’ territory for a few minutes, but over-eagerness resulted in offside play and penalty kicks kept them back. A successful rush by Mangatainoka. took them to their opponents’ goal, where Upson scored. The try was not converted. AA’oodvillc tried hard to equalise, but. although they crossed the line twice, they were held back. At halftime there was no alteration in the score. There was a change in AA T oodviHe s back-line upon resumption. Iv. Hutchins taking the half position, and Bryson going to first five-eighths. AA’oodville’s first points came from a movement initiated by Reside. Maclean and AlcGregor also handled, the latter scoring well out towards touch. AlcNeil’s kick was not successful. Air C. Skelton was.the referee.

Mr .J. Sullivan, who was instrumental in procuring the Dewar Cup originally. presented it with congratulations to the Alangatainoka captain, Lett, who returned thanks.
