EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 17, 1909.
Application was to be made by tbe Palmerston Guards to the Government for permission to form a Maxim gun squad. The corps was up to its full strength and recruits were still forthcoming. The committee inaugurated to go into the matter of beautifying the Square gardens had obtained from the curator (Mr P. Black) a plan of improvements to the observatory reserve, including a lakelet and a rustic bridge. A noticeable feature of the dairying districts around Pahiatua was the large number of stacks of beans successfully harvested. The beans were used for feeding pigs, and the straw for bedding for them. The area under the control of the Wanganui Education Board had been divided into three wards—northern, central and southern. Pal mere ton North and Eeilding schools were in the last-named.
