MARTON, March 28. Dr L. AT. Burnett, of Huntcrville, has boon on holiday at Tauranga. After a fortnight’s holiday at Alount Maunganui, All- and Airs J. B. Thorp and Air and Afrs 11. F. Low have returned. An inter-club tennis match was played on Saturday between the Rata and St. Andrew’s Clubs. Rata won by 21 sets and 162 games to 3 sets and 87 games. The Taihape Club, by beating Alarton in a cricket match under the auspices of the Rangitikei Association, on Saturday afternoon, established themselves as the champion side for the 1938-39 season. Batting first, Taihape put on 184 for the loss of only four wickets, when they declared their innings closed (Revell not out 107, Whittle and Wells not out 29). Alarton compiled 92 (Tidy not out 49, Gatrcll 12; Whittle 6 for 26, Ashcndcn 2 for 18;. Porewa beat Taihape Railway by 66 runs. Porewa made 376 (11. R Alarshall not nut 61. Parkinson 32, Fullcrton-Smith 24; Cherry 3 for 26). Railway knocßbd up 110 (Reid 34, King 13, Reid and Cooper not out 10; H. Alarshall 3 for 35; Parkinson 5 for 23). Huntcrville Ireat Old Boys on the. first innings. In their first knock Old Boys made 47 (Wysocki 11: Towers 4 foi 16, Holford 3 lot 25), their opponents replying with 94 (Hayward 25, Jllston 21, Packard 16; !>un- | can o for 34). Old Boys secured 98 in f their second innings (Wysocki 22, Klitselier 18, Jolly 16, Johnston 1Towers 3 for 16). By 18 points, the Wanganui East Croquet Club beat Alarton on the former’s lawns in a match for the Wedderspoou Cup. Fourteen rinks competed in the tournament held on the Alarton Bowling Club’s greens on Saturday. Six rounds were played, Hawkins’s rink (Alarton) being the winners with five wins and one loss. Haworth's rink (Wanganui East) were the runners-up with four wins and two losses. Air J. Afills was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Kia Ora Ladies’ Hockey Club. Mr Afills was re-olectcd president. Airs P. Sanders delegate to the Rangitikei Association, and ATiss M. Aitken secretary. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the Late Air H. Iwikau, who was a staunch supporter of the club. It was agreed to enter a team in the .competitions to be held under the control of the association. Successful from a practical and educational point of view was the annual camp of the New Zealand Army Service Corps, which Has concluded after a fortnight’s duration on the Alarton Racecourse. On the eve of breaking camp, the Mayor (Air F. Purnell) and the secretary of the Alarton Jockey Club (Mr A. Way) were the guests at tlie officers’ mess. In the babv carnival, the town baby is leading with 14.400 votes, the country baby polling 6000 votes. The superintendent of the Alarton Fire Brigade (Air G. Grey) and Air A. Anderson, also of Alarton, sustained head and facial injuries, which required medical attention, when they were involved in an accident near the railway viaduct, south of Ohingaiti. ATcssrs Grey and Anderson wore proceeding bv motor-car to Taihape to attend a fire brigade demonstration, when, it is understood. Air Anderson, who was driving, momentarily took liis eyes off the road when picking up his hat from the floor. The vehicle swerved to the side and ran against a bank. Mr Grey received the full force of the impact and received outs about the head and face from flying glass. Air Anderson’s injuries were less serious.
