EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” MARCH 28, 1909.
The New Zealand Trades and Labour Council strongly criticised Sir Joseph Ward’s action in offering a battleship, on behalf of New Zealand, to the British Navy. The Premier, it was said, was “intoxicated with jingoism.” The capital values of rating areas in tlie Palmerston North Hospital Board area were as follow:—Halcombe, £1622; Oroua county, £1,542,651: Pohangina county, £811,443; Foxton borough, £150,970; Feilding borough, £527,428; Kiwitea county, £1,571,557; Manawntu county, £1,638,955; Rongotca, £35,038; Kairanga county, £2.127.030: Palmerston North borough, £1.924.376. The number of natives of Ireland who emigrated during 1908 (23,29-51 was the smallest number for any year since 1857.
Fourteen tens of fruit from blastings (over 1000 cases) passed through Palmerston North railway station on one train. Similar quantities were going through daily. . An influenza epidemic continued to cause concern in London, where deaths averaged 100 per week.
