COMPULSORY SERVICE.
COUNCILLORS’ OPINION. A letter was received at the meeting of the Manawatu County Council today from the Feilding branch of the New Zealand Defence League, drawing attention to the serious international situation. Despite the crisis in •September of last year, public opinion In New Zealand was strongly apathetic concerning the vital question of the defence of the Dominion, the letter stated. Reference was made to a resolution of the New Zealand conference of the league expressing the greatest concern in this connection and urged that the voluntary system had broken down and tha.t some form of compulsion was necessary . Ibe league outlined its objects, winch urged compulsory service. The letter asked for members to join the league m order to give Hie movement impetus. Cr J. H. Perrett said that there would be a defence conference in Wellington shortly between Britain. New Zealand and Australia, and he thought in connection with the letter, tna there was nothing which could be objected to. The chairman said he thought that all the members were in agreement on the matter, and he expressed the opinion that it was an essential move.
