TIRITEA WATER
DEPARTMENT’S REPORT,
QUALITY AND TASTE
Forwarded by the Department of Health, a lengthy report was stated by the (Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansion!), at the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council last evening, to have been received on the Tiritea water supply, dealing with the catchment area, quality, silt and colouring matter, bacteriological quality, odours and taste, and increased storage capacity. It was decided to have copies typed and circulated to members of the council, and meanwhile the report was referred to the next meeting of the works committee.
Comment that the Tiritea water supply was still under drought conditions was made by the engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes), who said the level in .the dam had twice this year fallen below the lip of the by-pass, but rain had filled it up again. However, the level was again falling, but was unlikely, at this period of the year, to go as low as it did in February. By regulation of the pumps, it had proved possible to keep artesian water flowing into the mains for most of the 24 hours, thus conserving the supply at Tiritea.
Cr. G. Tremaine said that he had received a request from the Hokowhitu Bowling Club for the use of water on their green, lie suggested that all the howling clubs should he allowed to use the water on their greens, when there was an overflow at the dam, in form ntion regarding which could he obtained from the engineer. Tlie Mayor said he thought that the engineer could use his discretion in this matter.
