COUNTY AFFAIRS
INTERESTS IN MANAWATU. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Afanawatu County Council met at Sanson, to-day, the meeting being held earlier than usual on account of the approach of Easter. Cr W. E. Barber presided, others present being: Crs J. H. Perrott, W. E. Pearce, A. N. Alorcom, J. Boyce and D. W. Reid. Leave of absence was granted Cr. R. A. Wilson. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) wrote in connection with local Bills and the Local Legislation Bill. He mentioned that during the progress of local Bills through Parliament last session attention had been again drawn to the fact that the Standing Orders relating to local Bills had been suspended in many instances during the session to enable such Bills to be introduced and proceeded with. He had previously advised that, except in exceptional circumstances. strict compliance with the requirements of the Standing Orders would be insisted on, and, in future, the Government intended to adhere to this rule unless exceptional circumstances could be proved. Local authorities were urged, therefore, to take early steps in respect of future sessions towards initiating any legislation which they might desire to obtain by means of a local Bill. He also asked for the council’s co-operation in regard to local Bills and clauses for the Local Legislation Bill. Any items for inclusion in these Bills mnst be sent in within 42 days of the opening of the session.—Received.
A report by Air Parry of progress in the organisation df both national and provincial celebrations in connection with the Centennial was submitted.
The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) said that the part which interested him was the question of subsidies. He expected that a conference of local bodies would be held shortly. In regard to the Alt. Stewart memorial, he said that this was included under local memorials, although in this report the Afinister had mentioned his plan for provincial memorials only. The report was received.
