SLOVAKS FACE INVADERS. HUNGARIANS IN FLIGHT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 24, 1.55 p.m. LONDON, March 24. An official statement from Bratislava states that Slovak troops put up a stiff fight against the Hungarian invaders. Slovak airmen machinegunned the Hungarians and put two battalions to flight. Aircraft continue to patrol by means of flares. Many Hungarians were killed and wounded. A Warsaw report says that there are 10,000 refugees from Mcmel and Lithuania. The arrests by the Gestapo (Socret Police) include an exWar Minister (M. Daukantas) and the Port Authority Chief, M. Szleizis. a Berlin report states tluat the GermannSlovak treaty provides for the following clauses: (1) Germany takes over the protection of Slovakia’s political independence and territorial integrity. (2) For the execution of protection the German forces are granted the right to erect and occupy military bases in specified zones, in which military and" sovereign rights can be exercised by Germany, Slovakia granting the necessary ground and agreeing that provisions lor the German troops will be free of Customs duties. (3) Slovakia will organise her own military strength in close co-opera-tion with Germany. (4) Slovakia will conduct her foreign policy in close co-operation with Germany. (5) The treaty will bo effective immediately and will be valid for 25 years.
