VISIT TO AUCKLAND.
PRIME MINISTER AND PARTY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 22. Making his first appearance in Auckland since Christmas, the Prime Minister (lit. Hon. M. J. Savage) arrived on the Limited express accompanied by Hons. D. G. Sullivan, and IV. Parry, and was greeted by enthusiastic supporters and representatives of manufacturing organisations. The group included the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis), the town clerk (Dir Melling) and members of Parliament. Interviewed, Mr Savage said be always felt at homo in Auckland, and now was looking forward to seeing what Auckland could do in the development of manufacturing industries. “It is my intention to make personal inspections of factories but it is impossible to see many in a few days, so I have decided to make periodical visits to various centres until I have visited all the factories throughout the country,’’ said Dir Savage. “The Government is doing all it is possible to do to fill the big gap caused by exchange control, and it is up to us and those engaged in industry to do everything humanly possible to fill that gap. “Upon our efforts depends the standard of living of the people,” he continued. “The mere paying of higher wages will not fill the gap. Higher incomes generally will not- do it-. The real income is to he found in production reflected in the incomes of the people.” Dtr Savage added that some thought all that was necessary was shorter hours and higher wages. That was the road to disaster. New Zealand's destiny depended upon production.
