LAWN TENNIS NOTES

Tennis players were very busy during Saturday and “the week-end.” 'i lie match against Waiiganui Association was the first since 1937, when, playing at Linton Street, Manawatu won by 16 rublnii-s to 8 as against 1? to 7 on Saturday. Of those playing on that occasion three men and throe women wore in the Manawatu team on Saturday, but the Wanganui team included only two men, and not a single woman. The women’s section of the Wanganui team was almost entirely composed of young players, only one married woman being included, and she was the youngest of the lot. This augurs well for their association, whereas Manawatu has lor some years relied oil married women, in fact they supplied the first six ranked players last season. There is a great dearth of promising girls in the Manawatu district, though there are a number of boys who look like developing into strong players. The match was won on the mixed doubles of which the Manawatu players did not lose one, and only lost one set, in which the emergency lady had to partner Boddy in the top pair. On Saturday the Secondary Schools’ Tournament was also played for the Tunes and Oakley Cup which was won by the Levin girls, and the G. H. Bennett and Co. Cup which wont to the Palmerston North Boys’ High School team. The finalists in the girls’ section both came from the southern clubs, Miss C. Jacob, who played top for the South in their recent match against the North, boating the much younger Miss E. Attwood, the Levin High School champion. They played first and second respectively in the match against Hutt Valley juniors. Among the boys the finalists were Churchill of the Palmerston North High School and Andrews, neither of whom wore nominated for the junior match against Hutt Valley. Of the hoys who played in that match Blonkhorn, of Levin, was the only one playing on Saturday, and just lost 7—9 to Churchill. In the final of the doubles the finalists in the singles wore beaten by Blcnkhorn and Elsmore (Wcraroa). “During the week-end” the singles championships of the P.N. L.T.C. were brought down to the concluding stages. Li the morning O’Brien boat Hume, Hobin heat Sheerin, and S. Hooper beat Johns.

In the afternoon Hobin, who has not lost a match yet, had a bye, so O’Brien and S. Hooper played for the right to meet Hobin in the final. This proved a very level match, Hooper leading 5—4 in the first set, and O’Brien taking tbe last three games for the set at 7—5. In tbe second set Hoojior again led o —4 and won at 7—5. In tbe third sot Hooper led 4—2, but O’Brien, finishing the stronger. took the next four games for the set and match. There were three loft in the women’s com|>etition, Miss Haggitt having beaten Mis New during the week, and having to meet Mrs I.>onnon. This match also went to three sots, Mrs Lennon taking the first at 6—4. Miss Haggitt the second at G—3, and Mrs Lennon tbe third at 6—2. Miss Haggitt meets Mrs Hobin in the semi-final, and the winner of this match meets Mrs Lennon in the final. Mrs Oscar Andrews has presented a very fine mounted photograph of lier son “Buster,” with Noel Wilson and the brothers, A. L. and D. G. France, to the Palmerston North Club to be hung in the tearoom of the pavilion. This was tbe last time in which members of the club wore eligible to represent Wellington in the Wilding Shield match. Wellington beat Canterbury. This was also the last year that Andrews was playing in New" Zealand before leaving for Fngland. and memhers of the club will tie pleased to have this record of tbe best player, after the late Anthony Wilding that New Zealand lias ever produced.
