Runs came quickly, Matheson swinging Walsh high to the leg fence to send 200 up. the English fielding was crisp and keen, the batsmen finding it hard to got the ball away. Both bowlers developed great accuracy and the batsmen settled down to play them on their merits. Walsh was flighting the ball well and turning both ways, enough to heat the bat. To add to the discomfiture of the batsmen lie was occasionally keeping very low. With the score at 215 Jackson replaced Smith and Pearson cut him behind point to reach his 50 It was much better batting than had marked the Auckland venture on Saturday, with the spirit of enterprise that had previously been lacking.
