Feb. 21. _ Most enjoyable was the Guy Cup tennis match played on the local court between Cheltenham and Stairway on Saturday, this being the final match in the first round of the competition. After some exciting and closely contested games, the Stanway team proved too strong for the visitors, the result being: Stamvuy, 10 games; Cheltenham, 6. The details of play are as follow: —Mixed doubles: bliss J. Groves and M. Loot beat Miss L. Stratford and A. Humphrey, 6 —3; Miss L. Marshall and K. Marshall lost to Miss D. Hill and M. Short, 4 Mrs 11. Hamilton and I. Old beat Miss 11. Murray and J. Anderson, 6—4; Miss Y. Green and It. Turner lost to Miss J. Anderson and J. M. Anderson, 56. Women’s doubles: Misses Groves and Marshall lost to Misses Stratford and Hill, 4 —6; Mrs Hamilton and Miss Green lost to Misses Murray and Anderson, 3—6. Men’s doubles: Lcct and Marshall boat Humphrey and Short, 6 —3; Old and Turner beat J. Anderson and J. M. Anderson, 6 —l. Women’s singles: Miss Groves beat Miss Stratford, 4 —3; Miss Marshall beat Miss Hill, 4 —o; Mrs Hamilton lost to Miss Murray, o—4;0 —4; Miss Green beat Miss Anderson, 4 —3. Men’s singles: Loot beat Humphrey, 4 —3; Marshall beat Short, 4 —2; Old lost to J. Anderson, 2—4; It. Turner beat J. M. Anderson, 4 —2. Miss P. Cmzc is fho guest of her sister, Mrs P. Sterne; she is recuperating after being in the Palmerston North Hospital for some weeks. Mr 11. Guy, who is still an inmate of a private hospital in Palmerston North, is making satisfactory progress. Miss Jocelyn Chamberlain is the guest of her aunt Mrs U. 15. Miles. Mrs McGilvray, of Sydney, lias been the guest of Mrs 11. Jefferies. Mr and Mrs J. Wathcrston and family have returned home after a pleasant fortnight’s holiday at Kai Iwi. Miss Iris Craino. is a visitor to Hamilton.
