ENJOYABLE PICNIC.

CONVENT AND MARIST SCHOOLS

There was a particularly large attendance at the Awapuni racecourse on Saturday on the occasion of the picnic for the children of the Convent and Marist Brothers Schools. A high wind proved disagreeable, but nevertheless a very enjoyable time was spent. The ladies’ committee, consisting of Mesdames Christensen, Greening, Summers. Power, Creed, Lyons, Jervis, O’Connor and Jones, had a busy time serving ices, drinks and apples, which wore provided free. Mr F. W. Aisher was handicapper and starter, and he was ably assisted by Messrs Redwood, O’Connell, Lee, O’Connor, McErlain and Bearsley, while Messrs Dinnan, Fenton, Kavanagh and Rodgers looked after the tiny tots’ events. Much credit is due to the secretary (Mr Creed), and his assistant (Mr Kelly) for the businesslike way in which the recording of the day’s programme was carried out.

A notable feature was the excellent behaviour of tho boys under tho capable direction of Rev. Bros. Tarcissius and Bernard, who are in charge of tho newly-opened boys’ school. Thanks are due to them for their assistance with the sports programme. Between races, baseball and cricket ensured that there were no dull moments. Among visitors to the grounds were Rev. Father Jansen and the Sisters of Mercy, who chatted happily with parents and children.

Tho sports trophies were presented by Very Rev. Monsignor MacManus, who complimented tho parents and children on the increased attendance at this annual event. In a brief speech he warmly thanked the committee for their work and interest on the children’s behalf. Results of the various events are as follows: — '
