CROQUET.

WELLINGTON TOURNEY. WELLINGTON, Eel,. 20. Boisterous conditions prevailed on Saturday for play in the croquet championships now being finalised at Riddiford Park, Lower Hutt. The strong wind prevented the matches being played in good time, and it was impossible to execute the finer points of the game. At times the ball was seen to be blown from the straight course with disastrous consequencos to the player who otherwise would have secured control, consequently there were some surprises in the results. The ladies’ associate section was won by Mrs Cadwallader, who defeated Mrs McLennan in the second life, thus winning both lives. To have come through both lives of the event as Mrs Cadwallader has done has been an excellent achievement; she well deserved the title. The runner-up is to be decided between Mrs Bryan and Mrs McLennan .

The open championships will ho finalised to-morrow.

The handicap doubles have been won by Mesdames Bryan and Stonehouse, who defeated Mrs Piper and Miss McKenzie in the final. The level events have also been concluded. Mrs Woodley having won the No. 3 event, with Mrs Allen as runner-up. The No. 4 event has been won by Mrs Morgan, who beat Mrs G. Collins in the final. In the Woodley-Allan match, which was won by the former in two straight games, Mrs AYoodley played well to win. from such a worthy opponent. On the other lawn both Mrs Collins and Mrs Morgan, whose match was watched with interest, played exceedingly well, and both well deserved a reduction in handicap. These two latter players are excellent shots, and have good strokes at their command. With more experience, they should prove to be strong players in the higher grade. The handicap singles section has been won by Mrs Walker, Woburn, who has been playing well. In the final against Mrs Heenan, both played carefully. Following are the results of matches played on Saturday : LADIES’ ASSOCIATE. First life.—Mrs Cadwallader beat Mrs McLennan, 2G—24. LEVEL SINGLES, NO. 3 EVENT.
