FEILDING EWE FAIR.

VALUES EASIER THAN IN 1938. RESTRICTED LIMITS. The annual ewe fair in Feilding was hold yesterday, when compared with 71s last year, the top price lor 2-th ewes was 45s which two vendors received for small lines. Brown Bros, secured that price early in tho sale, while M. A. McLeod’s pen of 20 reached the same figure later in the afternoon. Taken all round, the market for 2-th’s reflected the tendency for an easing of values experienced at recent sales held on the West and East Coasts, due mainly to the lower prices prevailing for wool and mutton, together with the fact that there is a shortage of feed. Another factor contributing to tlie state of the market is the apparent •uncertain prospects for meat and wool, particularly in regard to the former. The not unexpected, but nevertheless disquietening, news that a 3 per cent restriction had been placed on New Zealand and Australian meat was received during the afternoon, and was freely discussed by those present, who feared that the local market would ease as a result. Bidding did not come freely in the older sheep sections, and at times pennies had to be accepted to advance the price. Considering the poor quality of some of the sheep, the prices obtained were satisfactory, but it was in respect of well-known breeders’ lines that usually sell easily that the cautious tone was noticeable. Several breeders wlio received 26s last year for their five-year-olds secured only 16s yesterday. * In the early aftemon the market was brighter and best quality 5-yr ewes made 19s 6d and 4yrs 26s 6d.

L. N. J. Northcott secured top price for his 4-yr ewes, the price being 25s for a pen of 133. Among the sales effected were the following, which give a good indication of the prices for all classes of ewes offered:— TWO-TOOTHS.

Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report that approximately 44,000 owes were submitted to a large attendance of buyers. Tho quality in the main section was hardly up to the standard of recent years, the bulk of the entry comprising medium quality 5 and 6-ycar ewes, with only a small proportion of good straight lines of 4 and 5-ycar owes on offer. Tho sale opened quietly, and passings were' fairly frequent in the early stages. However, once the market was established, vendors were prepared to sell, with tho residt that practically the,, whole of the entry changed bands at realisations in keeping with recent sales. In the 2tooth cwo section approximately 14,000 ewes were penned, which commanded a groat deal of attention. The quality was outstanding, and a very free sale resulted, prices being fully firm on late rates. The following are some of our main sales; - Two-tooth ewes account M. A.
