PURCHASE OF PERMITS.

The Manawatu Racing Club haa purchased tho two-day permit held by the Dawievirke Racing Club and formerly exercised in April by the Woodville District Jockey Club on behalf of the Dannevirke Club, which formerly had throe permits (tho one-day mooting held by the Waipukurau Club on its behalf having been purchasod by tho Waverley Club). The Manawatu Hunt Club, whose permit. was formerly used by arrangement, by the Manawatu Racing Club, has applied for the return of its permit and, it is understood, intends to use it on July 29. However, having purchased the Dannevirke permits, tho Manawatu Racing Club ie now in a position to conduct a twoday winter meeting, which will be held on May 19 and 20. A contract ha 9 been let by tho club for tho removal of about 100 old tree stumps just on the outsido of tho existing track between the two and three furlong posts at Awapuni, in order that the course may be widened by nearly a chain there. This is in pursuance of tho club’s intention to provide a proper ateoplochase course, for which some preliminary. work has already ben done, and which it is hoped to have ready by the winter of 1 940 - , ■ The Manawatu Racing Club is now framing its programme for the winter mooting, for which two steeplechases are contemplated on oach day. This will lie an added incentive to steoplechasing in tile district, and will assist the Wanganui Club, which holds its winter meeting in .June.
