MINE CLOSING DOWN.
AT BROKEN HILL. Received February 18, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 18. Mr W. N. Cranz (manager of the Broken Hill Proprietary mine) announced to-day that operations at the mine would cease on March 4. The decision to close the mine was the result of the workable ore being exhausted. Since work began at the mine in 1884 about 12,300,000 tons of ore has been mined and the aggregate value of the mineral extracted is about £160,000,000.
