U.S. FLAG DESTROYED.
INCIDENT ON MARIPOSA. (Independent Cable Service.) Received February 17, 8.5 a.m. HONOLULU, Feb. 15. A formal protest was lodged to-day ■with the United States Government by the officers and crew of the Mariposa, who revealed that a passenger on a round trip, Mr G. Annesley, at a shipboard function last night, deliberately set alight an American flag. The crew protested to the captain and thereupon Mr Annesley was confined to his stateroom.
Australian and New Zealand passengers apologised to the captain, while Mr Annesley to-day himself apologised to the captain. Mr Annesley is of Irish extraction and resides in London. His occupation is that of a landowner.
