KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Kiwitca County Council was hold at Kimbolton on Wednesday, the chairman (Or L. T. McLean) • presiding. Also present were Crs 1). T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, J. H. Williamson, F. E. Tappin, A. S. D’Ath, A. E. Shannon. D. Stent, and W. P. Shaw. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department advised payment of the suositiy on maintenance of main highways amounting to £l4ll 10s 4d. Tiie Public Works Department, also wrote advising approval of the acceptance of Mr in. <J. McPherson’s tender of £sll 4s 6d for metalling, etc.,. 87 chains of Conspicuous Road.— ReceivedA circular letter was received Hum the Department of Internal Affairs, forwarding copy of programme suitable for Physical Fitness Week, and from the president of the Counties’ Association, requesting the co-operation of all county councils with the various sports organisations in their districts m order to make this innovation the success it deserves to he.—Received. A letter was forwarded by the Commissioner of Transport, advising that the New Zealand Safety Road Council at its quarterly meeting early in March will consider proposals as to whether or not it is in the interest of road safety to impose restrictions on the use of motor-cycles, and requesting the council’s views on the subject.—The council is of the opinion that restrictions should be imposed on the use of motor-cycles. A letter was received from the Rangitikei County Council advising that the latter council had received objections to the taking of lands at Onepuhi for protective works and for a road, and that such objections will he heard at Marton, on March 8, 1939. The town clerk, Eeilding, advised that at its meeting held on January 27 the Provincial Centennial Committee unanimously approved the design for a memorial hall and bathing pavilion to he erected on the foreshore at Petonc as a provincial memorial to commemorate the founding of the province by organised settlement, at an estimated cost of £10,000; and on the basis of contribution, which the provincial committee considered a fair one, the local bodies in Zone E (Eeilding and Marton area) would he called upon to provide £207, this council’s share being allocated at £lo.—The council was not in favour of contributing toward the erection of the proposed memorial at Petonc. OVERSEER’S REPORT.

No. 650 highway wa-s graded by the power grader, 'limber is on older to do the repans to the decking, breastwork, and hantirai.s, etc., on the Cheltenham cross road bridge. Alain liigli■ways: Good progress has been made by i thy contractor with the metalling of No. 52 highway. He still has to put out about 300 cubic yards to complete his contract. Grading lias been done on the Rangiwahia Flats, Shaw’s Flat, and on other parts of this highway by the old grader plant. Slips of an extensive size have been removed by the old truck on the new deviation, and at Cliff Road near Mangawcka. A ring fence has been erected on the big filling at the deviation to protect the willows from cattle. Roads other than main highways: Cheltenham Riding: Beacoiwfield Road has been graded with the power grader, and watertables and culverts cleaned out. Hayne’s Road has been graded and watertables cleaned; on Barrow's Road the fern was cun back. Kiwitca Riding: Slips have been removed and general maintenance work carried out. Waituna Riding: Maintenance works have been carried out, slips removed, and culverts cleaned. Williamson’s Road West has been graded by the power grader. Onga Riding: General maintenance work lias been done and growth cut back. Pccp-o’-Day Riding: The stripping of the new metal pit on Air E. W. Beard's property is proceeding very well and should not take long to complete. A new concrete pipe culvert has been put in on Bluff Road and the watertables cleaned. Kimbolton Riding: The grader plant has been through the following roads, grading the surfaces and cleaning out watertablcs: Terrace Road, To Awa Road, Forest Road, Mcßcth’s Road, Junction Road, and Cliff Road. A number of slips have been removed by the lorry and corners taken off on Terrace Road and Branch Iload. Two new 9in. concrete pipe culverts have been put in on Terrace Road 'and the new formations where corners have been cut back have been metalled, watertablcs cleaned, and all overhanging fern, etc., cut to give visibility. The intersection at Branch Point and No. 52 highway has been widened, and a new 9in. concrete pipe culvert put in to replace the broken carthcrnware culvert across No. 52 highway at this intersection. Pakihikura Riding: Temporary repairs have been done to the broken culvert on Mangarcrc Road. All corners have been regraded. Rangiwahia Riding: Good progress has been made by the metal contractor on the Alain South Road and Bowling Road, slijis have been removed on Oroua Gorge Road, Afangoira Gorge Road, and water tables cleaned. The old grader plant has graded Te Parapara Road, also Couper’s Flat. IJautapu Riding: Slips have been removed and general maintenance work done. The metal contractor has completed his contract on Kawhatau Valley Road. A start will be made in a few days to put in new concrete pipe culverts to replace the broken earthenware pipes; the 24in.. 9in. and 12in. pipes arc on the works ready to be placed. General: Most of the surfaces of the roads in the county arc in poor condition at present; the graders being off the roads in the dry weather lias let the surfaces cut up.
