FIGHTING INNINGS.

WAIKATO BEATEN,

Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Feb. 16.

Sir Julien Caljn’s cricketers had to fight for every run when they beat Waikato, holders of the Hawke Cup, on Seddon Park to-day. When the match was resumed Waikato had lost nine wickets for 12S, and Hampton, the last man, was run out with the score at 131. The wicket and outfield were perfect, and there was brilliant sunshine, with a strong cross wind.

Dyson took 25 minutes to score a single, and when he was 11 he was well caught at first slip. Dempster and Heane played correct cricket, and the lunch score was 63 for one wicket. Dempster was having trouble with the thumb he injured in Wellington, but produced some splendid off-shots and well-placed strokes on the side. He hit one six and three fours. Hnrdstuff never settled down, but Oldfield displayed some fine wristy shots. The bowling of Clough, Everest and Going was very steady, with loose balls few and far between. The Waikato fielding was also much better than previously. The visiting tail-enders played sound cricket and considerably improved the position. The score at stumps was 304 for eight wickets.
