FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Feb. 15.

At the meeting- of the Foxton Borough Council, the Health Officer (Mr W. J. Guinan) reported on an inspection of certain houses in the borough which he found in urgent need of repair last November, lie stated that he had communicated with the owner who had agreed to carry out the work required, but on a further inspection being made in December the inspector found that nothing had been done. He had further communicated with the owner, who had replied to the effect that the inspector was at liberty to close the houses.. The inspector asked that the council take the necessary steps to have the health regulations enforced. The Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau) said that the owner had explained to him that he had been unable to obtain a builder to effect the repairs. Cr. Middleton said the matter only stressed the po ; "t that there were a number of houses in Foxton in an unfit state for habitation. There was a housing shortage and he thought the Government should again be written to pointing this out and urging that it proceed with the erection of the State houses already promised without delay. A resolution on those lines was carried. The Public Works Department intends commencing the sealing of the State and main highways in the borough on Monday. Recently the employees of New Zealand Woolpack and Textiles. Dtd., decided to raise funds for the purpose of providing a children’s playing area in Foxton. The Borough Council, to show its appreciation of the gesture, offered to subsidise any money raised by £1 for £1 and to pro-

vide a section for the purpose. Then the Government offered local bodies assistance towards (he construction of centennial memorials, and it was decided to convert the echemo into this, the employees readily agreeing. The sum of £IOOO is now practically assured. At a meeting of the Borough Council, the employees wrote advising that they had now raised the sum of £BO for the equipment of a children’s playing area, and made application for .the subsidy. It was decided that the council would honour its promise and make available the section south of the Council Chambers for the purpose of a Centennial Memorial. It was_ decided to apply for a £250 State subsidy and to suggest to the employees that a queen carnival be held to raise the money already in hand to £750. Mrs C. Fitt, of Whirokino Road, has returned homo after undergoing an operation In a private hospital.
